Lexus Previews 2016 ES Facelift Ahead of Shanghai Launch
A single teaser image confirms the 2016 Lexus ES will debut at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show, with exterior updates expected for the mid-size saloon.
Lexus has released a teaser image of the updated 2016 ES saloon, confirming that the facelifted model will make its global debut at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show on 20 April. The single image shows the front end under partial cover, hinting at styling changes for the mid-size luxury saloon.

The 2016 ES is expected to introduce a sharper look, with Lexus previewing updates to the headlights, spindle grille and front bumper. Revised fog lights and new LED daytime running lights are also likely to feature, alongside a more angular front bumper. These changes are intended to help the facelifted ES stand out from the current model, which has been on sale since 2012.
Lexus is positioning these changes as a mid-cycle refresh rather than a complete redesign. The focus is on updating the exterior to keep the ES visually competitive in the premium saloon segment, particularly in markets like China where demand for this type of vehicle remains strong.
Platform, Production and Powertrains
The current, sixth-generation ES is built on Toyota’s K platform. Production takes place in both Japan, at the Fukuoka plant, and in the United States, at the Georgetown facility. The model was originally designed by Pansoo Kwon and Yuji Fujiwara. Dimensions for the ES stand at 4,895 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width and 1,450 mm in height, with a 2,820 mm wheelbase.
Under the bonnet, the facelifted ES is expected to retain the existing engine line-up. Options include a 2.5-litre petrol engine, a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid, and a 3.5-litre V6. Transmission choices are set to remain the same, with a six-speed automatic or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) depending on variant. No major mechanical changes have been confirmed ahead of the Shanghai unveiling.
