Mercedes-Benz unveils updated 2016 G-Class with more power
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class arrives with uprated engines, subtle styling tweaks and a new AMG Edition 463, as the German manufacturer refreshes its iconic off-roader.
Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the facelifted 2016 G-Class, bringing more power across the range, updated styling details and a new AMG Edition 463 variant. The changes apply to the G350d, G500 and the high-performance AMG models, with the refreshed line-up heading to market later in 2015.
Engine upgrades across the G-Class range
The G350d diesel receives a notable increase in output, with its 3.0-litre V6 now delivering 245hp, up from 211hp, and torque rising to 600Nm. This reduces the 0-100km/h time to 8.9 seconds. The G500 adopts a new 4.0-litre biturbo V8, shared with the G500 4x4 Concept, producing 422hp and 610Nm, allowing it to sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds.
Both AMG models see their outputs lifted. The G63 AMG now offers 571hp, a 27hp increase, with 760Nm of torque. The range-topping G65 AMG rises to 630hp, up from 612hp, and delivers a peak torque of 1,000Nm. These changes are aimed at keeping the G-Class competitive among luxury SUVs while maintaining its off-road credentials.
Styling and equipment changes
Visual tweaks are subtle. The AMG flared wheel arches are now colour-matched to the body, and the G350d receives new 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels as standard. Bumper designs have been revised, but the G-Class retains its familiar silhouette.
Mercedes-Benz also introduces the AMG Edition 463, a special model with unique exterior and interior trim enhancements. Details include exclusive materials and finishes, aimed at buyers seeking a more individual look and feel.
Market position and availability
Mercedes-Benz has not yet announced pricing for the updated G-Class range. The changes are expected to help sustain interest in the G-Class as rivals continue to refresh their luxury SUV offerings. The new models are due to reach showrooms later in 2015.
