2016 North American Car and Truck of the Year nominees revealed

Jury names 19 cars and 21 trucks and SUVs as contenders for the 2016 NACTOY awards, with winners to be announced at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

The shortlist for the 2016 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards has been announced, with 19 cars and 21 trucks and SUVs in contention. The jury, comprising automotive journalists from the United States and Canada, will narrow the field over the coming months, with winners set to be named at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January.

The car category includes a mix of mainstream and performance models. American brands are well represented, with the Chevrolet Camaro, Malibu and Spark all nominated, alongside Ford’s Mustang Shelby GT350 and a pair of Cadillacs. Imports include the Audi TT, BMW 7-Series, Honda Civic, Jaguar XF, Mazda MX-5 Miata and Toyota Prius, among others.

Trucks and SUVs in contention

The truck and utility field is diverse, spanning pickups, crossovers, vans and luxury SUVs. Notable entries include the new Nissan Titan, Toyota Tacoma and Tesla Model X, as well as the Volvo XC90 and three Mercedes-Benz models. Honda, Hyundai and Kia all have multiple nominees, reflecting the growing competition in the crossover segment.

Next steps for the awards

Over the next few months, the jury will reduce each list to ten semi-finalists. Finalists will be selected following further evaluation, including test drives. The winners will be revealed during the opening of the 2016 Detroit show, following last year’s victories by the Volkswagen Golf and Ford F-150.
