Nico Rosberg has made it clear that the fight for the 2016 Formula One World Championship is already underway, despite the 2015 season not yet concluded. Speaking at a sponsor event in November 2015, the Mercedes driver said that both he and teammate Lewis Hamilton had begun preparations and testing focused on next year’s title battle.

Rosberg, who finished runner-up to Hamilton in both 2014 and 2015, ended the 2015 season with renewed momentum. He claimed victory in the final two races ahead of his teammate, reversing a trend that had seen Hamilton dominate much of the year. The German driver credited a relentless work ethic and attention to detail for his late-season resurgence, dismissing suggestions of technical changes or a drop in Hamilton’s motivation after the Briton secured the 2015 title early.

Inside the Mercedes rivalry

The relationship between Rosberg and Hamilton has grown increasingly tense as the pair have fought for supremacy in the dominant Mercedes team. Rosberg acknowledged that their former friendship has given way to a purely professional rivalry, with both drivers studying each other’s data and approach in pursuit of marginal gains. He described the process of constantly analysing his teammate’s performance, from car setup to driving style, as essential to staying competitive within the team.

Mercedes’ open information policy in the garage means both drivers have access to each other’s telemetry and setup information. While this transparency is intended to benefit the team as a whole, it also intensifies the intra-team battle, with each driver seeking to exploit any advantage. Team management, led by Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda, continue to face the challenge of balancing team harmony with the competitive instincts of their drivers. Looking ahead to 2016

With Mercedes expected to maintain its performance advantage into 2016, the title contest is again likely to be decided between its two drivers. Rosberg’s late-2015 form has given him confidence that he can challenge Hamilton more consistently next year. Both drivers are already working with engineers to test new setups and strategies ahead of pre-season testing.

The psychological battle between the Mercedes pair is set to remain a major storyline as the 2016 season approaches. With both drivers enjoying full support from the team and access to the same equipment, Rosberg’s improved form at the end of 2015 has ensured that the title fight will start well before the first race of the new year.
