Audi RS5 Sportback debuts at 2018 New York Auto Show
Audi introduced the RS5 Sportback at the 2018 New York Auto Show, expanding the RS5 line-up with a five-door fastback using the same 444bhp V6 as the coupe.
Audi chose the 2018 New York Auto Show to unveil the RS5 Sportback, a five-door performance fastback joining the RS5 coupe in the brand’s line-up. This marks the first time the RS5 badge has been applied to a Sportback body, offering buyers the coupe’s powertrain with extra practicality.
The RS5 Sportback uses the same 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 found in the RS5 coupe. Power stands at 444bhp (331kW) and torque at 600Nm, delivered to all four wheels via Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Audi claims a 0-60mph time of under four seconds, matching the coupe’s performance, with a limited top speed of 155mph as standard or 174mph when specified with the optional Dynamic Plus package.
Performance and drivetrain details
Quattro all-wheel drive is rear-biased in normal conditions, splitting torque 40:60 front to rear. The system can send up to 85 percent of power to the rear axle or 75 percent to the front if required. The RS5 Sportback also features RS-specific suspension and braking hardware, aiming to deliver the same handling focus as the coupe despite the more versatile body style.
Interior and practicality
Inside, the RS5 Sportback comes with RS sport seats, which can be trimmed in Nappa leather with an optional honeycomb pattern. A flat-bottomed RS multifunction steering wheel, RS-branded details on seats, sill panels and selector lever, and an RS-specific information display for the Audi virtual cockpit are all included. The RS design package adds red contrast stitching, Alcantara knee pads, and red accents on seat belts and floor mats.
The five-door fastback configuration gives the RS5 Sportback a practical edge over the coupe, with easier rear-seat access and a larger boot. This broadens its appeal to buyers who need everyday usability without sacrificing performance.
Market context and rivals
By launching the RS5 Sportback in New York, Audi targeted the US market, where fastback saloons and practical performance cars have a strong following. The RS5 Sportback faces competition from models such as the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63, though neither offers a direct five-door fastback equivalent. The RS5 Sportback’s combination of power, quattro traction and added practicality positions it as a distinctive alternative in the segment.
Audi’s decision to expand the RS5 range with a Sportback body follows the brand’s broader strategy of offering performance variants across more of its mainstream models. The RS5 Sportback’s arrival in 2018 gave buyers a new option in the performance saloon market, especially in North America, where it was first introduced.
