The 2019 model’s gains come despite increases in both dimensions and equipment. Volkswagen credits the improvement to several engineering changes, most notably the adoption of the MQB modular platform, a switch to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and aerodynamic tweaks including active grille shutters and air curtains. The result is a drag coefficient of 0.27.
Technical changes driving efficiency

Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or the new eight-speed automatic, with both gearboxes now returning the same combined fuel economy.
