Alguersuari to Sit Out 2012 Races to Focus on Fitness for F1 Return
Jaime Alguersuari will not race in 2012, concentrating instead on regaining fitness and targeting a comeback to Formula One for the 2013 season.
Jaime Alguersuari has confirmed he will not take part in any racing series for the remainder of 2012, choosing instead to concentrate on regaining peak fitness and preparing for a possible return to Formula One in 2013. The 22-year-old Spaniard, who lost his Toro Rosso seat at the end of 2011, has spent the year as Pirelli’s main tyre tester and as a co-commentator at grands prix, but will now pause competitive driving to focus on his physical condition.
Alguersuari’s decision comes after a year in which he was unable to secure a race seat following his departure from Toro Rosso. Since then, he has remained active in the paddock as Pirelli’s principal test driver, helping to develop the Italian company’s Formula One tyres. He has also provided commentary for British radio broadcasts at several grands prix, keeping him closely involved with the sport despite not competing.
Focus on 2013 Formula One Opportunities
Alguersuari has made it clear his intention is to return to Formula One as a race driver in 2013. He has not announced any specific team discussions, but speculation continues to link him with potential vacancies at teams such as Sauber, Williams and Force India. His youth and experience, having debuted in F1 at 19 and completed two and a half seasons with Toro Rosso, are seen as assets by several in the paddock.
His year as Pirelli’s main tester has kept him familiar with current F1 machinery and tyre behaviour, which could be valuable for teams seeking a driver with up-to-date technical knowledge. No Racing Commitments for Remainder of 2012
The Spaniard has not been linked to any other racing categories for the rest of 2012. Instead, his focus will remain on physical training and maintaining his profile within the Formula One community.
