Nico Rosberg says Fernando Alonso’s return to the back of the Formula One grid with McLaren-Honda would be especially tough after years of fighting for wins and titles.
Nico Rosberg has admitted he would find it difficult to handle the struggles Fernando Alonso is facing at McLaren-Honda, having previously been a consistent title contender. Rosberg explained that, before he was in a position to challenge Lewis Hamilton for wins and championships at Mercedes, racing in the midfield or lower end of the points did not feel so tough. He said he did not fully understand what it meant to have a car capable of victory until he experienced it himself. Now, with Mercedes dominating the sport, Rosberg says he appreciates how difficult it must be for a driver of Alonso’s calibre to return to a struggling team.
Alonso’s career reversal
Fernando Alonso’s switch to McLaren-Honda for 2015 marked a dramatic reversal from his years at Renault, where he won two world championships, and at Ferrari, where he regularly fought for titles. The McLaren-Honda partnership has struggled with reliability and pace, leaving Alonso far from the front of the grid. Rosberg drew a contrast between his own rise with Mercedes and Alonso’s current frustrations, noting that the pain of underperformance is sharper once a driver knows what it is like to win.
Rosberg also recalled his own early years at Mercedes, when the team was far from the dominant force it would become. He said he always believed that his perseverance would eventually pay off, even during the years when Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull were sweeping up titles. That belief, he suggested, made the lean years more tolerable. For Alonso, who has already reached the top, the prospect of fighting for minor points is a different challenge.
