Audi has revealed the S8 Plus, a new range-topping version of its A8 luxury saloon, claiming the title of the most powerful production Audi saloon to date. The S8 Plus features a heavily uprated 4.0-litre TFSI V8, now producing 605hp (445kW) and 700Nm of torque, with an overboost function briefly raising torque to 750Nm. Audi quotes a 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds and, with the optional Dynamic package, a raised top speed of 305km/h (190mph). Deliveries are set to begin in November 2015, with German prices starting from €145,200.

Engine and performance upgrades

The S8 Plus uses the familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, but Audi has increased power by 85hp over the standard S8. The engine now puts out 605hp and 700Nm, with a temporary overboost function taking torque to 750Nm. Power is delivered to all four wheels via an eight-speed tiptronic automatic and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system. The result is a claimed 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds, making the S8 Plus quicker than many sports cars. The standard top speed limiter remains at 250km/h, but buyers can specify the Dynamic package to raise this to 305km/h.

Styling and equipment changes

Audi has given the S8 Plus a number of visual changes to set it apart from lesser A8 models. These include a new rear spoiler lip available in body colour or carbon fibre, gloss black finishes for the single-frame grille and double bars, matt black honeycomb for the lower grille and side air inlets, and standard Matrix LED headlights with dynamic turn signals. The S8 Plus rides on 21-inch wheels and features bespoke S8 Plus badging.

Inside, the S8 Plus comes with a black full-leather interior highlighted by contrasting red stitching, stainless steel pedal covers, and a piano black centre console. Standard equipment includes an Alcantara headlining, ambient lighting, a DVD/CD changer, power-assisted door closing, and Audi’s convenience key with sensor-driven boot opening.

Market positioning and rivals

With its uprated engine and enhanced specification, the S8 Plus is positioned as a direct rival to high-performance luxury saloons such as the Mercedes-AMG S63 and BMW 760Li. The S8 Plus is the final evolution of the current A8 generation before an all-new model is expected. Pricing from €145,200 places it at the upper end of the segment, reflecting both its performance and equipment levels.
