Ford EcoSport production version debuts at Beijing show
Ford has unveiled the production-ready EcoSport at Auto China 2012, confirming Chinese manufacture and a 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine option for the compact SUV.
Ford has revealed the production version of its all-new EcoSport compact SUV at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show, confirming plans to build the model in China and positioning it as a global product to be sold in nearly 100 markets.
The EcoSport, based on Ford’s global B2E platform shared with the Fiesta, is designed to attract buyers seeking a compact, fuel-efficient SUV alternative to small cars. Its global unveiling in Beijing follows earlier concept showings in India and Brazil, with the production model retaining much of the concept’s chunky, upright styling. A large trapezoidal grille, slim headlights and prominent wheel arches define its look, while a tailgate-mounted spare wheel and roof rails underline its SUV credentials.
Ford has confirmed that the EcoSport will be built in Chongqing, China, as well as in Camaçari (Brazil), Rayong (Thailand) and Chennai (India). The company is targeting rapid expansion in fast-growing markets such as China and India, where compact SUVs are increasingly popular. The EcoSport is the second of 15 new vehicles Ford plans to introduce in China by 2015 as part of a broader Asia Pacific and Africa strategy.
Technical details and equipment
The headline engine for the EcoSport is Ford’s new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder EcoBoost turbo petrol, making its debut in this model. The engine produces 120 PS and 170 Nm of torque, delivering performance on par with a larger 1.6-litre unit but with improved fuel efficiency. The EcoBoost is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. In some markets, including India, a 1.5-litre diesel will also be offered.

Inside, the EcoSport offers seating for five and a cabin focused on comfort and refinement, with equipment levels that include Ford’s SYNC infotainment system with voice control, Smart Keyless Entry, Power Start and a cooled glovebox. Safety kit includes dual front airbags, curtain airbags, ABS, ESP, hill assist and rear parking sensors. The Titanium trim, shown at Beijing in Mars Red, features 16-inch alloy wheels and a chrome grille.
Market positioning and rivals
Ford is aiming the EcoSport at buyers who might otherwise consider the Nissan Juke, Renault Duster or upcoming compact SUVs from Volkswagen and Skoda. In India, pricing is expected to fall in the Rs 7–9 lakh range, offering a genuine alternative to midsize saloons and premium hatchbacks. The EcoSport’s combination of compact dimensions, high driving position and fuel-efficient engines is designed to appeal to urban customers who want SUV style without a large footprint or high running costs.
