Kovalainen warns Bottas risks career stagnation at Williams
Heikki Kovalainen says Valtteri Bottas must leave Williams for a title-winning team soon or risk losing momentum in Formula One.
Heikki Kovalainen has warned that Valtteri Bottas could see his Formula One career stall if he remains at Williams beyond 2016, after missing out on a move to Ferrari. Kovalainen, who experienced a similar loss of momentum after leaving McLaren for Caterham, said Bottas risks getting stuck in a midfield team while his championship window narrows.
Bottas, 26, was strongly linked with replacing Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari for the 2016 season. Ferrari, however, chose to keep the 35-year-old Raikkonen for another year, leaving Bottas to complete a fourth consecutive campaign with Williams.
Kovalainen, now racing in Japan’s Super GT series, told Finnish broadcaster MTV that while Bottas is still young and has the potential to become world champion, he needs to find a seat with a team capable of delivering titles. "Valtteri eventually needs to get into a car that can win the championship, and if that doesn’t start to happen beyond next year, he could lose the momentum. It is then hard to get back from that," Kovalainen said, reflecting on his own career trajectory.
Williams' limitations and Bottas' prospects
Williams has provided Bottas with a competitive but not front-running car since his debut in 2013. The team’s form has fluctuated, and despite podiums, it has not challenged for wins or the championship. Bottas’ continued presence at Williams, after missing out on the Ferrari drive, raises questions about how long he can wait for a top seat to become available.
