Citroen C3 XR production model unveiled for Chinese market
Citroen has revealed the production version of the C3 XR, a compact crossover designed specifically for China, with sales set to begin in December 2014.
Citroen has officially introduced the C3 XR, its new compact crossover aimed exclusively at the Chinese market. The production version, closely following the concept shown at the Beijing Auto Show earlier in 2014, is scheduled to reach showrooms in China from December.
The C3 XR is the result of Citroen’s continued partnership with Dongfeng, with local production handled by the Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroen joint venture. Citroen is targeting the growing demand for small SUVs and crossovers among Chinese buyers, positioning the C3 XR below the larger C4 Aircross in its regional line-up.
Styling for the C3 XR remains close to the concept car, with a high-riding stance, sculpted sides and Citroen’s double-chevron grille. The production model features roof rails, pronounced wheel arches and a rear skid plate, all elements designed to appeal to urban buyers looking for a blend of SUV image and everyday practicality. The C3 XR is based on the same platform as the Peugeot 2008, sharing much of its underpinnings while adopting Citroen’s distinct design cues.
China-only model and market positioning
Citroen has confirmed that the C3 XR will not be offered in Europe. Instead, it is tailored to the preferences of Chinese customers, with a focus on compact dimensions and a raised ride height suited to city driving and less developed roads. The C3 XR enters a competitive segment, taking on rivals such as the Ford EcoSport and the Nissan Juke, both of which have found success in China’s growing SUV market.
Technical specifications for the C3 XR have not yet been fully detailed by Citroen at launch. However, the model is expected to offer a choice of petrol engines, likely including the 1.6-litre naturally aspirated and turbocharged units found in other locally produced Citroen models. Transmission options and exact equipment levels are to be confirmed closer to the on-sale date.
Citroen’s strategy in China
With the C3 XR, Citroen is seeking to bolster its share in the Chinese market, which has become the largest for the brand outside Europe. The company’s approach involves developing models specifically for Chinese buyers, rather than adapting European products. This strategy is evident in the C3 XR’s market positioning and design, both of which are tailored to local tastes.
The C3 XR joins a line-up that already includes the C-Quatre and C-Elysee, both developed for China. The success of the C3 XR will depend on how well it can compete with established rivals in a segment where style, practicality and value are key selling points.
Citroen has not announced plans to export the C3 XR to other markets. The focus remains on local production and sales, reflecting the importance of China in the company’s global strategy.
