A video leak has revealed the Citroën ID, codenamed M43, showing its exterior and interior styling ahead of the expected 2013 launch.
Citroën’s plans for a new mid-size saloon surfaced unexpectedly in January 2012 when images of a car codenamed M43, believed to be named the Citroën ID, appeared online. The video leak, quickly removed by Citroën, was captured in screenshots by Auto Motor und Sport, offering the first clear look at the model’s design.
The images show a saloon with clear European styling, including pronounced character lines and chrome detailing along the bodywork. The front end appears to follow Citroën’s current design language, with slim headlamps and a prominent grille. The car’s proportions place it in direct competition with established German rivals, suggesting Citroën’s intent to move further upmarket in the segment.
Inside, the screenshots reveal a three-spoke steering wheel and metallic trim elements. There is also a visible infotainment screen in the centre console area, indicating Citroën’s focus on bringing the model up to date with current in-car technology. The cabin design, while only partially visible, appears to favour a clean and modern layout.
What the leak reveals about Citroën’s strategy
The decision to target German saloons with a distinctly European design marks a shift for Citroën, which has traditionally focused on comfort and unconventional styling. The ID’s sharper lines and chrome accents indicate a move towards a more mainstream executive look, likely aimed at attracting buyers who might otherwise consider models from Volkswagen, Opel or Ford.
The model’s codename, M43, and the lack of official confirmation on the ID name suggest that Citroën is still finalising details ahead of launch.
