Renault rules out EDC automatic for Duster in India
Renault has confirmed that the Duster SUV will not receive the EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission in the Indian market, despite earlier speculation.
Renault has decided not to offer the EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) automatic transmission on the Duster SUV in India, despite earlier reports suggesting the option was under consideration for the local market. The company confirmed that neither the EDC nor any other automatic gearbox is planned for the Indian Duster at this stage.
The EDC transmission, a six-speed dual-clutch unit, is available in the Duster for certain international markets, typically paired with the 1.5-litre dCi diesel engine in two-wheel-drive configurations. In Europe, the facelifted Duster also gained other upgrades such as a new infotainment system, cruise control and a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. However, Indian buyers will not see these automatic features on their Duster for now.
Renault’s decision comes as the market for automatic SUVs in India continues to grow. Rival models, such as the Hyundai Creta, have seen strong demand for automatic variants. Reports indicate that automatics account for around 30 percent of Creta bookings, far exceeding Hyundai’s initial expectations. The lack of an automatic Duster may affect Renault’s ability to compete directly with such models in this segment.
Competition and alternatives for buyers
With the Duster remaining manual-only, Indian buyers seeking an affordable automatic SUV are left to consider alternatives. The Hyundai Creta, for instance, offers both petrol and diesel automatic options and has quickly become a popular choice. Other competitors in the segment are also moving to introduce or expand automatic offerings, responding to a clear shift in consumer preferences.

The Duster’s platform is shared with the Nissan Terrano, which also did not offer an automatic gearbox in India at the time. Both models are produced locally and have been positioned as value-focused SUVs, but the absence of an automatic option could see them lose ground to rivals as the market evolves.
No timeline for future automatic Duster in India
Renault has not indicated when, or if, an automatic Duster might be introduced in India. For now, the company’s focus remains on the manual variants. Buyers interested in the EDC-equipped Duster will need to look to European or other international markets, where the transmission is available.
