Ferrari’s Spending Power Pulls Clear of Williams, Says Symonds
Williams technical chief Pat Symonds points to Ferrari’s larger budget and engine investment as key reasons for the British team’s growing deficit in the 2015 Formula One season.
Ferrari’s financial muscle is now making a visible difference on track, according to Williams technical boss Pat Symonds, who says the Italian team’s budget is leaving Williams behind in the fight for podiums during the 2015 Formula One season.
At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Sebastian Vettel finished third for Ferrari, a full 22 seconds clear of Williams drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas. Symonds said the gap is not hard to explain: Ferrari’s budget is “much bigger than ours,” he told Brazil’s Globo, and the team has made “a huge investment to make a better chassis but especially a better power unit.”
Ferrari’s Engine Upgrade Widens the Gap
Ferrari’s engine was seen as its main weakness in 2014, but for 2015 the team introduced substantial upgrades. The latest power unit, making its debut at Monza, brought the Scuderia’s performance up to the level of the Mercedes units used by Williams. Felipe Massa said the improvement was clear, especially on a high-speed circuit like Monza where engine power is decisive. While Williams had relied on the competitiveness of its Mercedes engine to challenge Ferrari, the Italian team’s progress has made it increasingly difficult for Williams to keep up as the season has progressed.
