Ferrari tempers expectations ahead of Sochi Grand Prix

Ferrari has cautioned against expecting a repeat of its Singapore success as the Formula One team prepares for the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi, citing track conditions and Mercedes’ resurgence.

Ferrari has moved to manage expectations for the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi, warning that a repeat of its Singapore win is unlikely as the team anticipates a tougher challenge from Mercedes and tricky track conditions.

Sebastian Vettel’s victory in Singapore two weeks ago briefly reignited Ferrari’s championship ambitions, but Mercedes reasserted its dominance at Suzuka. Team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has since downplayed the likelihood of another upset in Sochi, pointing to the circuit’s notoriously low grip as a limiting factor for the SF15-T.

Arrivabene said he expects Ferrari to be more competitive at Austin, while Mexico remains an unknown and Brazil is rated as a 50-50 prospect. The team believes Abu Dhabi could play to the car’s strengths. Sochi, however, is not seen as a likely venue for Ferrari to challenge Mercedes, despite Pirelli’s decision to bring its softest tyre compounds, an option that has generally favoured Ferrari’s 2015 car.

Track conditions and tyre strategy

Ferrari’s progress this season has been clear, with improved results compared to a difficult 2014 campaign. Kimi Räikkönen noted that recent races at Monza and Suzuka, both theoretically unfavourable circuits for Ferrari, yielded better-than-expected performances. The team’s optimism is tempered by the specific challenge of Sochi’s surface, which offers little natural grip and could expose Ferrari’s remaining weaknesses.

Pirelli’s softest tyres have suited Ferrari at several events this year, but team spokesman Alberto Antonini cautioned that Sochi’s low grip may neutralise this advantage. Ferrari is therefore focused on maximising what the car can deliver, rather than expecting a repeat of Singapore’s result.

Championship context and future prospects

The Singapore win gave Vettel an outside shot at the drivers’ title, but Mercedes’ response in Japan underlined the scale of the challenge. Ferrari’s management is now looking to consolidate progress and target strong results where the car’s characteristics are best matched to the circuit. The team will review its 2015 campaign only after the season concludes, with focus remaining on extracting the maximum from each remaining race.

  • Ferrari is not expecting Sochi to suit its car as well as Singapore did.
  • The team is looking to Austin and Abu Dhabi for stronger results.
  • Mexico’s return to the calendar introduces uncertainty for all teams.
