Fisker Automotive announced that the production version of its Karma plug-in hybrid saloon would be unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Deliveries were scheduled to begin in November 2009, with a starting price of $87,900 in the United States. The production Karma closely follows the dramatic proportions and sculpted lines of the 2008 concept car, with only minor exterior changes for the showroom model. Updates include a slightly larger upper grille that extends towards the outer corners, an enlarged lower air intake to improve cooling, and a newly designed aerodynamic diffuser at the rear. The exhaust is routed directly behind the front wheels, a decision made to optimise both cooling and aerodynamics. Functional side vents expel hot air when the petrol engine is running. The B-pillar design is fully flush and meets proposed 2012 rollover safety requirements.

Q-Drive Plug-in Hybrid System

Quantum Technologies supplies the Karma’s Q-Drive powertrain, which combines a 22.6kWh lithium-ion battery with two electric motors. These motors deliver a combined output of 408hp, enabling the Karma to accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 125mph. The Q-Drive system allows for up to 50 miles of electric-only driving, after which a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine rated at 260hp acts as a generator to extend the vehicle’s range. This approach provides the benefits of electric mobility while retaining the flexibility of a conventional vehicle for longer journeys.

The Karma features an aluminium spaceframe developed in cooperation with Norsk Hydro. Its exterior body combines aluminium and composite panels to balance strength and weight. The vehicle’s ride and handling are tuned for a sporty character, supported by a long wheelbase, wide track, and low centre of gravity, all contributing to stable cornering and a responsive driving experience at higher speeds.

Inside, the Karma is designed to seat four adults comfortably. Fisker emphasises a sustainable interior strategy, using eco-friendly materials and finishes where possible. The final production interior was scheduled to be revealed at the Detroit show, promising a luxurious and tailored space for occupants. The flush B-pillar not only contributes to safety but also adds to the clean look of the cabin.

Production, Assembly, and Market Plans

Fisker expected annual Karma production to reach 15,000 units. The first cars would be assembled by Valmet Automotive in Finland, a company known for its expertise in building premium vehicles. Fisker planned to establish 40 US retailers by October 2009, with the first 20 to be announced in January. European pricing was scheduled for release at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009. The company reported strong initial demand, with early production sold out until mid-2010.
