Haas names Vergne, Gutiérrez and Hülkenberg as 2016 F1 seat contenders

Gene Haas has confirmed that Jean-Éric Vergne, Esteban Gutiérrez and Nico Hülkenberg are leading the shortlist for Haas F1 Team's race seats for its 2016 Formula One debut. The team founder outlined the situation as the American squad prepares to enter the championship with two available seats.
Vergne and Gutiérrez are both currently reserve drivers for Ferrari, a team with which Haas has close technical ties. Their experience with Ferrari's current power unit and simulator work gives them a natural advantage as Haas looks to establish itself quickly in the series. Hülkenberg, meanwhile, is a race driver for Force India, and his availability depends on his contractual situation with his current team.
Ferrari connection shapes shortlist
Haas has made no secret of its preference for drivers with recent Formula One experience, particularly those familiar with Ferrari hardware. The team will use Ferrari power units and technical support for its first season, making the Ferrari-linked duo of Vergne and Gutiérrez logical options. Both have previous F1 race experience and have spent the 2015 season working with Ferrari's engineering group.
Hülkenberg's name has also been raised, but his future depends on Force India's plans for 2016. Haas indicated that the team will monitor the driver market as existing teams confirm their line-ups, leaving open the possibility of considering other candidates if circumstances change.
