Hamilton backs Rosberg to stay ahead of Schumacher at Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton expects Nico Rosberg to maintain his advantage over Michael Schumacher in the Mercedes Formula One team after outperforming the seven-time champion in 2010 and 2011.
Lewis Hamilton has said he expects Nico Rosberg to continue outpacing Michael Schumacher at Mercedes, arguing that Rosberg's determination and youth give him an edge over his veteran teammate. Hamilton, who raced alongside Rosberg in karting and now competes against both in Formula One, made his comments as Mercedes confirmed Rosberg would stay with the team for the coming seasons.
Rosberg joined Mercedes in 2010, the same year Schumacher made his comeback after three years away from Formula One. Despite Schumacher's record of seven world titles and 91 Grand Prix wins, it was Rosberg who established himself as the team's lead driver over two seasons, consistently finishing ahead of Schumacher in both qualifying and races.
Rosberg's performance at Mercedes
In the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Rosberg scored more points and regularly outqualified Schumacher. The German driver, still seeking his first Grand Prix win at that stage, was seen as Mercedes' future, while Schumacher faced scrutiny over his form after returning from retirement. Hamilton said he always expected Rosberg to push hard against Schumacher, noting that Rosberg's hunger for success remains strong.
Hamilton contrasted Rosberg's current motivation with Schumacher's, suggesting that the seven-time world champion could not match the same level of hunger he showed earlier in his career. While Schumacher improved his pace in the second half of 2011, doubts persisted over whether he could return to his previous dominance. Some in the paddock argued that Schumacher should consider stepping aside for a younger driver, but others, including former driver Gerhard Berger, insisted Schumacher had earned the right to decide his own future in the sport.
Schumacher's future and Mercedes' direction
Schumacher's contract with Mercedes ran through 2012, but speculation about his future continued as the team looked to build around Rosberg. Mercedes' long-term commitment to Rosberg signalled confidence in his ability to lead development and deliver results.
