Honda develops portable alcohol detector for smart keys
Honda and Hitachi have created a breath-based alcohol sensor that can be integrated into a car’s smart key, aiming to prevent drink-driving before the driver even enters the vehicle.
Honda and Hitachi have jointly developed a portable alcohol detection device designed to be integrated with vehicle smart keys. The prototype, announced by the companies, measures a driver’s breath alcohol concentration in just three seconds and can be used before entering the car. The system is intended to help prevent drink-driving by stopping the engine from starting if alcohol is detected above a set threshold.
The detector works by identifying saturated water vapour from human breath, allowing it to distinguish between actual breath samples and attempts to deceive the system, such as using exhaled air from other sources. Once the driver exhales onto the device, the measured alcohol level can be shown on the vehicle’s display panel. If the reading is above the preset limit, the system acts as an ignition interlock, preventing the engine from starting.
How the device fits into existing safety efforts
Japan already requires transportation operators to use alcohol detectors before professional drivers begin their shifts. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has promoted ignition interlock technology for drink-driving offenders. Honda’s approach differs by placing the sensor in the key, allowing drivers to check their alcohol level before even reaching the car. This could reduce the temptation to drive after drinking, as the test can be performed anywhere, not just at the vehicle.
The collaboration between Honda and Hitachi follows similar developments by other suppliers. For instance, Autoliv has been working on in-car automatic breath sensors, integrating alcohol detection into the vehicle cabin itself. Honda’s portable solution targets both private motorists and commercial operators looking for a flexible, pre-entry screening tool.
