2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class leaked ahead of Detroit debut
The next-generation G-Class keeps its iconic boxy looks but introduces a new independent front suspension, a wider body and a thoroughly modernised interior.
Images of the all-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class have surfaced ahead of its official unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show, confirming that the SUV retains its instantly recognisable silhouette while introducing major engineering and interior changes.
Exterior: familiar form, subtle changes
The leaked photos show that Mercedes-Benz has chosen evolution over revolution for the G-Class. The boxy outline, upright stance and exposed door hinges remain, with only modest tweaks to the grille, headlights and bumpers. The front end now features a fuller grille and LED projector headlamps with more pronounced surrounds. Fender flares are slightly revised, and the side mirrors resemble those on the E-Class, adding a modern touch without diluting the G’s character. At the rear, changes are limited to minor differences in the tail lights. The overall effect is a slightly more rounded but still unmistakably G-Wagen shape.
Chassis and suspension: a new approach
Underneath, the 2019 G-Class moves away from tradition by adopting an independent double-wishbone front suspension, replacing the old live axle. This is the most radical mechanical update since the model’s introduction in 1979. The new setup, combined with a 34 percent stiffer ladder frame, is expected to improve on-road comfort and handling while retaining the off-road capability that defines the G-Class. Mercedes-Benz claims improved ground clearance between the axles and better fording depth compared to the outgoing model. The G-Class retains three fully lockable differentials and a low-range transfer case, with the transfer case now flange-mounted directly to the new 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. A new G-Mode off-road drive programme will tailor steering, throttle response and damping for challenging terrain.
Interior: luxury and technology upgrades
Inside, the transformation is more dramatic. The dashboard adopts the widescreen digital displays already seen in the S-Class and E-Class, with two 12.3-inch screens forming the instrument panel and infotainment system. The cabin is wider, offering 38mm more front legroom, 150mm more rear legroom, and increases in shoulder and elbow room. Materials and fitment move further upmarket, with options including an Alcantara headliner, 16-speaker audio and massaging seats. Traditionalists can still opt for analogue instruments, but the overall feel is far more modern than before.
Engines and transmission
While Mercedes-Benz has not detailed the full engine range, the new G-Class is expected to launch with updated six- and eight-cylinder options. The 4.0-litre biturbo V8 from the previous G 500 facelift is likely to feature. All engines will be paired with the new nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, which has been specifically adapted for the G-Class with dedicated software to improve shift speed and response.
What it means for G-Class buyers
For buyers, the 2019 G-Class offers the same iconic presence with more comfort, space and technology. The switch to independent front suspension signals a move towards greater everyday usability without abandoning the model’s core off-road strengths. Purists may question the impact on ruggedness, but Mercedes-Benz is keen to stress that the G-Wagen’s off-road credentials remain intact.
