Lexus has announced a recall of about 214,500 vehicles in the United States after identifying a risk of fuel delivery pipe corrosion. The issue affects specific 2006 to 2008 model year vehicles, including the GS 300 and GS 350, IS 250 and IS 350, and LS 460 and LS 460L. This recall was reported to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The problem arises when certain ethanol fuels with low moisture content are used, which can corrode the internal surface of the fuel delivery pipes.

Details of the recall and affected models

The affected vehicles are as follows:

  • 2006-2008 Lexus GS 300 and GS 350
  • 2006-2008 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350
  • 2006-2008 Lexus LS 460 and LS 460L

Lexus has determined that some ethanol fuel blends, especially those with low moisture content, can cause the internal surface of the fuel delivery pipes to corrode. If this corrosion occurs, the vehicle’s malfunction indicator light (MIL) may illuminate. Over time, the corrosion could create pinholes in the pipes, which may result in fuel leaks. Such leaks pose a safety risk, as leaking fuel increases the chance of fire if exposed to an ignition source.

Recall process and repairs

Lexus will notify owners of the affected vehicles by first-class mail, with notifications scheduled to begin in late January 2009. Owners will be asked to bring their vehicles to their local Lexus dealer, where the fuel delivery pipes will be replaced with newly designed components that are more resistant to this type of corrosion. The repair will be performed free of charge to the vehicle owner.

No other Lexus or Toyota vehicles are included in this recall. Lexus has stated that the recall is limited to the United States, and there have been no reports of similar incidents outside this market. The company is taking this precautionary step to ensure customer safety and vehicle reliability.

What owners should do next

Owners of the affected Lexus models are advised to wait for the official recall notification before scheduling a service appointment. However, those who have concerns or experience issues such as the malfunction indicator light illuminating can contact their local Lexus dealer or reach out to the Lexus Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-255-3987 for further guidance. Lexus recommends that customers use only approved fuels and monitor their vehicles for any warning lights or unusual fuel odours until repairs are completed.

Background and implications

This recall highlights the challenges automakers face when designing fuel systems compatible with a range of fuel blends available in the market. Ethanol, commonly used as an additive in petrol, can have varying effects on vehicle components depending on its purity and moisture content. Lexus’s decision to proactively replace the fuel delivery pipes aims to prevent potential safety hazards and maintain customer trust.

The recall process is a standard industry practice designed to address potential defects before they result in accidents or injuries. Lexus’s response includes clear communication with affected owners, free repairs, and ongoing support through its dealer network and customer assistance centre.
