Lotus team principal Eric Boullier has confirmed that the team is in talks with Nico Hulkenberg about a potential Formula One drive for 2014, as Kimi Raikkonen’s future with the Enstone outfit remains unresolved.
Boullier told French media on Tuesday that Hulkenberg is a candidate for the seat, with the German currently racing for Sauber but reportedly free to negotiate after the Swiss team missed salary payments in May and June. Hulkenberg’s contract situation has made him one of the most prominent names in the F1 driver market for 2014.
Lotus’s interest in Hulkenberg comes as speculation grows over Raikkonen’s next move. The Finn, who has delivered strong performances for Lotus since his return to F1, is widely rumoured to be on Red Bull’s shortlist to replace Mark Webber for 2014. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has said the team aims to finalise Webber’s successor by August, with continuity and long-term commitment key criteria for the seat alongside Sebastian Vettel.
Boullier is expected to meet with Raikkonen’s management this week as Lotus seeks clarity on whether the 2007 world champion will stay. While Lotus has not ruled out retaining Raikkonen, the team is preparing for alternative scenarios should he depart. Alongside Hulkenberg, Paul di Resta has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.
Hulkenberg’s contract situation at Sauber
Nico Hulkenberg’s position at Sauber has become unstable after reports that the team failed to pay his salary for two consecutive months. This technical breach of contract means the German is not contractually bound to Sauber for 2014, making him available to negotiate with other teams. Sauber’s financial struggles have been well documented, and Hulkenberg’s performances have kept his name in contention for seats higher up the grid.
