Maybach has revived the Zeppelin name for a new flagship saloon, launching in March 2009 as the most exclusive model in its line-up. Based on the 57 S and 62 S, the Maybach Zeppelin introduces a higher-output 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine, bespoke styling cues and a selection of luxury features aimed at the top end of the market.

Performance and mechanical changes

The Zeppelin is powered by an uprated version of Maybach’s 6.0-litre V12 biturbo, now producing 471kW (640hp)—an increase of 28hp over the standard S models. Peak torque remains at 1000Nm. Both the 57 Zeppelin and the longer 62 Zeppelin use this engine, offering strong performance for a car of their size and weight.

Externally, the Zeppelin is distinguished by 20-inch Chrome Shadow alloy wheels, finished using a layered painting process for a subtle darkening effect towards the centre. New exterior mirrors with a more angular design and integrated V-shaped indicators reduce wind noise and improve visibility. The signature “ZEPPELIN” script appears beneath the double “M” badge on the grille and boot lid, marking the car’s status in the range.

Interior appointments and exclusive options

Inside, the Zeppelin features a mix of California beige and deep Stromboli black leather, with high-gloss piano lacquer trim and diamond-quilted seat upholstery. Contrasting topstitching and black piping reinforce the bespoke look. Genuine lambskin carpets are fitted as standard. Discreet Zeppelin branding appears on the centre console, partition screen (optional on 62), champagne flutes, door sills and key ring.

The Zeppelin introduces a patented interior perfume atomiser, available exclusively for this model at an additional €3950. The device uses an illuminated Plexiglass sphere to disperse a chosen fragrance through the cabin, activated by a button on the rear console. Maybach claims the system delivers a subtle scent without overpowering the occupants.

Pricing, availability and production

The Maybach 57 Zeppelin is priced at €406,000 and the 62 Zeppelin at €473,200, both before VAT in Germany. Orders opened in March 2009, with first deliveries expected in September of that year. The Zeppelin is positioned as a limited-edition model, with production numbers not officially specified at launch.

Maybach’s Zeppelin competes directly with top-tier luxury saloons such as the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Bentley Mulsanne, but with a focus on bespoke features and technical exclusivity. The model’s launch reinforces Maybach’s ambition to remain a contender in the ultra-luxury segment, even as competition intensifies and the market for high-end saloons becomes increasingly specialised.
