McLaren lets Magnussen 2016 contract option expire
McLaren allowed its option on Kevin Magnussen’s 2016 Formula One contract to lapse at the end of August, leaving the Dane free to explore other teams.
McLaren allowed its contractual option on Kevin Magnussen for the 2016 Formula One season to expire at the end of August, according to a report from Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. Magnussen, who has served as McLaren’s reserve driver in 2015, is now able to negotiate freely with other teams for a race seat next year.
The timing of the lapsed option coincides with a fresh round of speculation linking the 22-year-old Dane to potential drives elsewhere, including the new Haas F1 entry. Magnussen’s future at McLaren had been uncertain, with his prospects closely tied to the outcome of Jenson Button’s contract discussions for 2016.
Button and Alonso remain central to McLaren’s plans
Team principal Eric Boullier stated that Fernando Alonso is confirmed for 2016, and the team intends to keep Jenson Button. However, uncertainty around Button’s future, reportedly due to ongoing negotiations over his contract terms, has left Magnussen’s position unresolved. A McLaren source, cited by Auto Motor und Sport, suggested the decision ultimately rests with Button.
Magnussen, who made his Formula One debut with McLaren in 2014, has maintained his ambition to secure a full-time race seat. With McLaren’s option now lapsed, he is expected to pursue opportunities with other teams for the 2016 season.
