Mercedes Begins Contract Talks with Hamilton for Multi-Year Deal
Mercedes has opened negotiations with Lewis Hamilton on a new multi-year Formula One contract, as the team looks to secure its driver line-up beyond 2015.
Mercedes has started negotiations with Lewis Hamilton over a new multi-year contract, according to team boss Toto Wolff. The move comes just after Nico Rosberg’s own future with the Brackley-based squad was secured, leaving the team eager to lock in both its drivers for the seasons ahead.
Wolff confirmed to Austria’s Kronen Zeitung that discussions with Hamilton are already underway. He described the British driver as a “fixed part of the team” and expressed hope that Hamilton would remain with Mercedes for a long time. The team is aiming for a multi-year agreement, signalling its intent to maintain stability in its driver line-up as it continues to compete at the front of the Formula One grid.
Hamilton’s contract situation and paddock rumours
Hamilton’s current deal with Mercedes runs until the end of the 2015 season. The 2008 world champion has so far kept his thoughts on contract talks largely private, telling reporters that with a year left on his contract, he is not in a rush to make a decision. Despite this, speculation in the paddock has linked Hamilton with a possible return to McLaren, especially if Rosberg secures the drivers’ title and the coveted number one for the 2015 car.
Rosberg, who has clashed with Hamilton on and off the track during their title battle, has publicly stated he sees no reason why their partnership cannot continue. He pointed out that while there have been tense moments, the pair have always managed to resolve their differences and move forward as team-mates.
