First images of MG GT surface ahead of official debut
MG’s upcoming GT saloon has been revealed in a series of leaked images, giving the clearest look yet at the new model ahead of its September launch.
Unpublished images of the MG GT have appeared online, revealing the new saloon’s styling ahead of its scheduled public debut in September 2014. The photos, reportedly taken at a preview event for select UK press in Longbridge, show the production-ready car in detail for the first time.
The MG GT is based on the same platform as the MG5 hatchback and the Roewe 350, both developed under SAIC’s stewardship of the MG brand. While the GT is positioned as a compact saloon, the new images highlight the adoption of a more assertive front end, which MG sources have indicated will also appear on the forthcoming CS crossover.
Design details revealed
The leaked photographs show a low, wide front grille and swept-back headlamps, distinguishing the GT from the more conservative MG6. The rear adopts a notchback profile, in line with Chinese-market preferences, and the car rides on 16-inch alloy wheels. MG has opted for a semi-independent rear suspension, a decision likely driven by cost and packaging considerations for the segment.
The saloon’s proportions and detailing suggest MG is targeting both domestic Chinese buyers and export markets, including the UK. The styling links to the MG5 are clear, but the GT’s front treatment signals a move towards a unified design language for future MG models.
Engine range and technical details
While MG has not released full technical specifications, information from the preview event points to three petrol engines: a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre with 109hp, a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit producing 129hp, and a new 1.4-litre turbo paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. These engines are already familiar from other SAIC products and are expected to be offered with both manual and automatic gearboxes, depending on market.
The MG GT is positioned to compete in a segment that includes the likes of the Ford Focus saloon and the Volkswagen Jetta in China. Its launch will also mark the first time MG adopts this new family face, which is set to appear on the upcoming CS crossover as well.

With the official reveal set for the Chengdu Auto Show, MG is expected to announce further details on trim levels, pricing and export plans.
