TomTom Go 730 users can claim a free map update if a new version is released within 30 days of first activating their device, thanks to TomTom’s latest map guarantee. After this initial period, further map updates are available through a paid subscription to the company’s Map Update Service.

How the free map update works for Go 730 owners

Every TomTom navigation device, including the Go 730, comes with a latest map guarantee. If a new map becomes available within 30 days of the device’s first use, owners are entitled to a one-time free download of that map. This is managed through TomTom HOME, the company’s free desktop software. The offer ensures that new buyers are not left with outdated maps immediately after purchase, even if the device was manufactured or shipped before the latest release.

To claim the free update, users must connect their Go 730 to a computer and use TomTom HOME to check for new maps within the 30-day window. If a newer map is available, it can be downloaded and installed at no extra cost. If no new map has been released during that period, the device remains current until the next update cycle.

After the 30-day guarantee, ongoing map updates require a subscription to TomTom’s Map Update Service. As of October 2008, this service started at £7.95 per quarter, with pricing varying by device and map region. The subscription provides quarterly map releases, each incorporating changes validated by Tele Atlas, including new roads, updated points of interest and corrections reported by users.

Subscribers download updates through TomTom HOME, which notifies users when a new map is available. The service is designed to keep sat-nav devices accurate as road networks evolve, with TomTom stating that up to 15% of roads can change each year. Each update typically includes thousands of miles of new roads and community-sourced corrections.

Map Share: community corrections between updates

In addition to official map releases, TomTom Go 730 users can benefit from Map Share, a feature allowing drivers to make instant corrections on their device. Changes such as street names, speed limits, traffic directions and points of interest can be edited directly. Through TomTom HOME, users can also access corrections made by the wider Map Share community, helping to maintain accuracy between quarterly updates.
