Proton Saga FLX SE launched in Malaysia with 1.6-litre engine
Proton has introduced the Saga FLX SE to the Malaysian market, offering a 1.6-litre Campro engine, CVT transmission and a factory body kit from RM49,449.
Proton has released the Saga FLX SE in Malaysia, expanding its entry-level saloon range with a better-equipped, more powerful variant. The model went on sale in late November 2011, priced at RM49,449 for solid paint and RM49,899 for metallic, according to Proton’s official announcement.
The Saga FLX SE is powered by a 1.6-litre Campro engine producing 108hp and 150Nm of torque, paired exclusively with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This marks a step up from the regular Saga FLX, which is normally offered with a smaller engine. The SE sits RM2,900 above the standard FLX, reflecting its higher specification and performance.
Equipment and styling upgrades
Proton has differentiated the FLX SE with a full factory-fitted body kit finished in contrast grey, smoked rear combination lamps, fog lamps and 15-inch alloy wheels. The two available colours are Fire Red and Solid White, with no other paint options offered at launch.
Inside, the FLX SE features leather upholstery on the seats, steering wheel, door panels, parking brake and gear lever. This is a clear attempt to give the budget saloon a more upmarket feel, targeting buyers looking for affordable cars with additional comfort and visual appeal.
Market positioning and comparison
The Saga FLX SE is positioned as the sportier, more premium option within the Saga range, aimed at buyers who want more power and better equipment without moving to a larger or more expensive Proton model. It competes directly with other entry-level saloons in Malaysia, including the Toyota Vios and Suzuki Grand Vitara facelift, both of which have also seen recent updates in the market. For comparison, the 2012 Toyota Vios launched locally from RM73,000, placing the Saga FLX SE firmly in the budget segment.
Proton’s decision to offer only two colours and a single transmission option simplifies the range but limits choice for buyers. The inclusion of a CVT as standard is in line with market trends towards automatic gearboxes in the segment.
