Ferrari has recalled 458 Italia and 458 Spider models in the United States after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified a fault with the front boot latch that could result in a person becoming trapped inside. The recall covers cars built from 5 March 2010 to 20 May 2013.

The NHTSA notice states that the latch system in the front boot (commonly referred to as the trunk in the US) may not allow the lid to be opened from the inside in the event someone is trapped. The agency warns this could increase the risk of injury or death if a person cannot escape unaided.

Ferrari 458s have a front boot that, while small, is technically accessible. US regulations require an internal release mechanism in the event someone becomes trapped, even in vehicles where such a scenario seems unlikely. The recall applies to both the 458 Italia coupe and the 458 Spider convertible produced during the affected period.

Scope of the recall

Owners in the US are being contacted by Ferrari and instructed to bring their cars to an authorised dealer for inspection and rectification. The fix involves updating the internal release mechanism to ensure compliance with federal safety standards. No injuries or incidents have been reported in connection with this issue at the time of the recall announcement.

The recall does not affect other Ferrari models or 458s built outside the specified production dates. Owners with questions are advised to contact their local Ferrari dealer or the NHTSA hotline for further information.
