Stellantis and Tata Motors have formalised a new phase in their long-standing partnership by signing a definitive agreement to develop and manufacture vehicles in India for export to more than 50 global markets. The vehicles will be produced by Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited, the joint venture between the two companies based in Pune, Maharashtra. This move is an extension of a collaboration that has already lasted over two decades, now advancing into more sophisticated technology and product development.

Stellantis and Tata Motors Expand Global Collaboration

Details of the Agreement and Manufacturing Plans

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) will provide Stellantis with access to its proprietary product technology and vehicle architecture. Stellantis, in turn, will adapt these models to comply with regulatory and customer requirements in each target market. The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2026, and positions the Pune facility as a central manufacturing hub for these global vehicles.

Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited’s Pune plant is an integrated vehicle and powertrain manufacturing facility. It produces models for both Stellantis and Tata Motors, as well as engines, transmissions, and traction motors. The site already functions as an export base, with vehicles shipped to markets such as Japan and South Africa. The expansion under the new agreement will see an increase in the range and volume of vehicles destined for international markets.

Current Production at the Pune Facility

The Pune plant manufactures a variety of models for both Stellantis and Tata Motors. For Stellantis, the models include the Jeep Compass, Meridian, Grand Cherokee (CKD), and Wrangler (CKD). On the Tata Motors side, the Nexon, Altroz, and Curvv are produced at the same facility. In addition to complete vehicles, the plant also produces powertrains and components for export.

The facility’s output is not limited to vehicles for the domestic market. A significant proportion is exported, with the joint venture already supplying vehicles to countries such as Japan and South Africa. The expansion of the export programme is expected to further increase the global footprint of both companies.

Strategic Importance of India as a Manufacturing Base

India’s position as a cost-effective and technologically advanced manufacturing hub is a key factor in this partnership. The country offers a large, skilled workforce and a well-established automotive supply chain. By leveraging the Pune plant’s capabilities, Stellantis and Tata Motors aim to deliver competitively priced vehicles that meet international quality and regulatory standards. This strategy is designed to help both companies expand their presence in emerging and mature markets alike.

The collaboration also reflects broader trends in the global automotive industry, where manufacturers are increasingly looking to optimise their production networks and tap into new markets. For Stellantis, the partnership provides access to Tata Motors’ local expertise and proven vehicle architectures. For Tata Motors, the alliance opens up new export opportunities and strengthens its position as a global automotive player.

Potential Impact and Future Outlook

The expanded partnership is expected to bring several benefits. Increased production for export could create new jobs at the Pune facility and throughout the supply chain. The collaboration may also lead to the introduction of new models specifically designed for overseas markets, tailored to meet different regulatory and consumer preferences. Both companies are likely to benefit from shared investment in research, development, and manufacturing processes, which could improve efficiency and drive innovation.

As the global automotive market becomes more competitive, such alliances are becoming more common. Stellantis and Tata Motors’ decision to deepen their collaboration positions them to better respond to changing market demands and regulatory environments. The success of their joint export strategy could serve as a model for other automakers considering similar partnerships in India and other emerging economies.
