Castle Combe’s Racing School Subaru Imprezas have completed over 105,000 fault-free miles in seven years of intensive circuit use, with a new record in sight.
Subaru Imprezas used at Castle Combe Racing School have clocked up more than 105,000 miles of demanding circuit use without a single reported fault over seven years, putting the fleet on course to reach a new reliability benchmark by September 2009.
The partnership between Subaru and Castle Combe began in 2002, following a successful dealer day at the Wiltshire circuit. Since then, a succession of WRX and, from 2008, STI Type UK models have served as the backbone of the Racing School’s fleet. These cars are not confined to demonstration laps: duties include ARDS race licence testing, instructing track day novices, corporate events, and acting as course and safety cars during race meetings.
Each Impreza is subjected to a year of circuit driving before replacement, typically amassing around 5,000 miles in that time. The cumulative total now stands at over 105,000 miles, almost five laps of the globe, spread across 56,000 laps and more than 12,000 individual drivers.
Circuit conditions test reliability
Unlike typical road use, the track environment at Castle Combe is punishing. High-speed lapping, repeated hard braking, and constant acceleration put sustained stress on mechanical components. Despite this, the Imprezas have completed their duties without a single reliability issue reported by the circuit. Castle Combe’s management attributes this record to the Impreza’s rally-bred engineering and robust all-wheel drive system.
The current STI Type UK cars, producing 300 bhp and 300 lb ft of torque, are the latest in a line of Imprezas that have handled everything from high-speed passenger rides to intensive instructor sessions. The circuit’s staff have described the cars as fast, safe, and consistently reliable, reinforcing Subaru’s reputation for building durable performance cars.

For prospective owners, the Castle Combe figures provide evidence of the Impreza’s durability under far harsher conditions than most road cars face.
