Millennials are emerging as the key demographic driving interest in autonomous vehicle technology, according to an international survey of more than 14,000 drivers across 12 countries. The research, conducted by Accenture, highlights that Generation Y customers show a marked preference for advanced driver assistance systems that underpin the development of self-driving cars. The survey found that 90% of respondents expressed interest in at least some autonomous driving options, with millennials, also known as Gen Y, standing out as the most enthusiastic group. Their preferences are shaping the priorities of global car manufacturers as they invest in next-generation vehicle technology.

Millennials Lead the Push for Autonomous Cars

Survey Details and Demographics

The Accenture survey spanned 12 countries and included more than 14,000 drivers, providing a broad perspective on consumer attitudes towards autonomous driving. Millennials, who are now estimated to make up about one third of all US drivers, emerged as the demographic most open to adopting new vehicle technologies. Automakers are increasingly targeting this group, recognising their influence on the future direction of the automotive market.

Most Desired Autonomous Features

Safety remains the primary concern for most drivers, but millennials are especially keen on features that automate accident avoidance and make everyday driving easier. The most requested technologies include:

  • Automatic emergency braking (82% of respondents)
  • Automatic object-avoidance braking (76%)
  • Collision-warning systems (72%)
  • Fully automatic parking (71%)
  • Lane-keeping assistance (48%)

These features are seen as essential steps towards achieving fully autonomous driving. The popularity of such systems among younger drivers is prompting manufacturers to accelerate the development and integration of these technologies into new vehicles.

Millennials and Digital Expectations

Millennials’ comfort with digital technology and connected services is also influencing expectations for in-car connectivity, entertainment, and digital services. These preferences are increasingly bundled with advanced driver assistance systems, making vehicles not just safer but also more appealing to tech-savvy buyers. For millennials, features such as internet access and digital entertainment options are becoming important factors in their vehicle purchasing decisions.

Automakers are under pressure to prioritise autonomous and connected technologies in their product planning, particularly as millennials now account for a significant share of the driving population. Their willingness to adopt new technology is seen as a catalyst for the faster rollout of driverless features, both in mature and emerging markets. The survey’s findings indicate that the industry’s focus on autonomous vehicles is not driven solely by technological competition but by consumer demand, especially from younger buyers who expect automation and connectivity as standard.

Manufacturers are responding to these demands by investing more heavily in research and development of advanced driver assistance and autonomous systems. The influence of millennials is likely to shape not only the pace of adoption but also the design and functionality of future vehicles. As more millennials enter the car-buying market, their preferences for safety, convenience, and connectivity will continue to drive innovation across the automotive sector.

Broader Implications for the Future

The strong interest from millennials in autonomous features suggests a shift in how people view mobility and vehicle ownership. As this demographic continues to grow in influence, automakers may need to rethink traditional approaches to car design, marketing, and after-sales service. The integration of digital services and autonomous features could become standard expectations rather than optional extras.

With safety, convenience, and connectivity at the forefront, the automotive industry is likely to see a rapid evolution in the coming years. The preferences of millennials are not only accelerating the development of autonomous technology but also shaping the broader landscape of personal transportation.
