Suzuki IV-4 Production Model Spied Testing in Europe

Suzuki's forthcoming compact SUV, developed from the IV-4 concept shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, has been caught on camera during winter testing in Northern Europe. The prototype was heavily camouflaged, obscuring most of its design details, but the sighting confirms that Suzuki is moving towards series production for its new crossover.

Positioned to slot between the Jimny and Grand Vitara, the production IV-4 is Suzuki's answer to the expanding B-segment SUV market. This places it in direct competition with models such as the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Opel Mokka, Ford EcoSport and Chevrolet Trax. The segment has seen rapid growth across Europe, with buyers seeking compact dimensions and higher driving positions without moving to larger, more expensive SUVs.

The production model is expected to offer both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants, with Suzuki's ALLGRIP system anticipated on higher trims. While the prototype's camouflage makes it difficult to confirm how closely the final design will follow the IV-4 concept, the concept's proportions suggest a length of around 4,215 mm, a width of 1,850 mm and a height of 1,665 mm, with a 2,500 mm wheelbase. These dimensions would give the IV-4 a footprint similar to key rivals, with a slightly higher stance than some competitors.

Production and launch plans

Suzuki has confirmed that production of the IV-4-based SUV will begin in 2015 at its Hungarian plant, which already builds other models for European markets. The name for the production model has not been officially announced, and it is likely to change before launch. The choice of Hungary as the production site aligns with Suzuki's strategy to supply the European market efficiently and keep costs under control.
