Toyota Announces Details of Accelerator Pedal Entrapment Remedy
Toyota has outlined the technical fixes for accelerator pedal entrapment risks affecting several Toyota and Lexus models built between 2004 and 2010.
Toyota has released the specifics of its remedy for the risk of accelerator pedal entrapment by floor mats in several Toyota and Lexus models produced from 2004 to 2010. The company made the announcement following a safety advisory issued in late September 2009 and has begun notifying affected owners by post.
Technical changes to pedals and floor surfaces
The main element of Toyota’s remedy is a reconfiguration of the accelerator pedal. The revised pedal shape is designed to reduce the likelihood of it becoming trapped by an incorrectly installed or stacked floor mat, including older all-weather mats. For the Camry, Avalon and ES350, the company will also modify the floor surface beneath the pedal, increasing the clearance between the pedal and the carpet. This aims to address the risk even if non-approved mats are present.
In addition, Toyota will supply new, redesigned all-weather floor mats for affected vehicles equipped with genuine accessory mats. Both driver and front passenger mats will be replaced to ensure compatibility with the updated pedal design and prevent stacking or misplacement that could interfere with pedal movement.
Brake override system for selected models
Beyond the physical changes to pedals and mats, Toyota will install a brake override system on Camry, Avalon, and Lexus ES350, IS350 and IS250 models. This electronic system is designed to reduce engine power if the brake and accelerator are pressed at the same time, providing an additional safeguard against unintended acceleration.
