These models were chosen because they are widely owned and, being from 2010, are out of warranty and likely to require repairs. The research covered a range of zip codes in each state to ensure regional differences were captured.

While Alaska leads in repair costs, Michigan, often considered the heart of the US car industry, comes second with an average repair bill of $1,289. Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Missouri complete the top five most expensive states for car repairs. On the other end of the scale, West Virginia drivers face the lowest average repair bill at $1,033. Kentucky, Arkansas, Wyoming, and Mississippi also rank among the most affordable states for car repairs. This means there is a gap of $341 between the cheapest and most expensive states, which can make a significant difference for vehicle owners depending on where they live.
