The Swiss newspaper Blick reported that van der Garde and his backers, frustrated by the team's handling of contract commitments, were weighing legal action against Sauber ahead of the season finale.
Sauber’s driver contracts under scrutiny
Van der Garde had been Sauber’s official reserve throughout the 2014 season and was expected to participate in the first free practice session at Yas Marina. Instead, Adderly Fong, a driver from Hong Kong, took the wheel for the team during the Friday session. The change came as Sauber’s management faced pressure from multiple parties over its 2015 line-up.
Both van der Garde and Adrian Sutil were understood to have valid contracts to race for Sauber in 2015. However, the team announced that Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson would fill its two seats next season. This left van der Garde and Sutil sidelined, prompting legal threats from both camps. Blick reported that the dispute led Sauber to revoke van der Garde’s paddock access for the Abu Dhabi finale, citing the risk of legal complications during the race weekend.
Legal threats overshadow Sauber’s season end
The situation highlighted the contractual uncertainty that can arise in Formula One when teams seek new funding or change direction late in the year. Sauber’s late announcement of Nasr and Ericsson, both with substantial backing, left existing contract holders in limbo. According to Blick, van der Garde’s supporters, including his personal sponsors, were actively preparing legal steps to enforce what they claimed were binding agreements. The Sutil camp was also reportedly pursuing legal avenues, compounding the pressure on Sauber’s management.
Sauber’s decision to withdraw van der Garde’s paddock pass was a precaution as legal tensions mounted heading into the final race of the season. The team’s 2015 driver line-up remained a source of contention, with the threat of court action hanging over the winter break. The full outcome of the contract dispute would only emerge in the months following the Abu Dhabi event.
