Verstappen Could Leave Red Bull for 2017 Without Promotion, Report Claims

A report suggests Max Verstappen may exit the Red Bull programme for 2017 if he is not promoted from Toro Rosso, fuelling speculation about his future.

By Editorial Desk Updated

Max Verstappen could be free to leave the Red Bull Formula One programme at the end of 2016 if he is not promoted from Toro Rosso to the senior team, according to a report in Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport. The newspaper claims the 18-year-old Dutch driver's contract includes a clause allowing him to seek a drive elsewhere for 2017 should Red Bull opt not to move him up.

Luigi Perna, writing for the Italian sports daily, outlined that Verstappen's deal contains an exit clause tied directly to his promotion prospects. If Red Bull keeps him at Toro Rosso for a third year, Verstappen would be free to negotiate with rival teams for the 2017 season. This detail has not been officially confirmed by Red Bull or Verstappen's management.

Speculation has quickly turned to Ferrari, who could be in the market for a new driver if they choose not to renew Kimi Raikkonen's contract for a fourth season. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari's lead driver, is known to wield considerable influence over driver choices, and Verstappen has publicly praised Vettel's leadership and motivational style. Verstappen told La Gazzetta that Vettel stands out among his rivals for his ability to motivate his team, a comment some observers see as a nod to Ferrari's management.

The Dutchman was less complimentary about his current Toro Rosso teammate Carlos Sainz, stating he sees nothing to emulate in Sainz's approach. Tensions between the two have been apparent, with their rivalry intensifying at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Red Bull's Options and the Road Ahead

Red Bull faces a decision over whether to promote Verstappen to its senior team for 2017 or risk losing one of the most highly rated young drivers in the sport. The team has traditionally used Toro Rosso as a proving ground for talent, but rarely has a driver generated as much outside interest as Verstappen. If Red Bull retains both Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat, Verstappen could become a target for rivals, with Ferrari the most prominent name linked so far.

  • Verstappen's potential free agency could trigger moves throughout the grid.
  • Ferrari's decision on Raikkonen may be influenced by Verstappen's availability.
  • Red Bull may need to act to avoid losing Verstappen to a rival.

No official comment has been made by Red Bull Racing or Scuderia Toro Rosso regarding the reported contract clause. Verstappen's future is likely to remain a focus of driver market speculation as the 2016 season progresses.
