Max Verstappen open to Le Mans entry with father Jos
Max Verstappen has expressed interest in tackling the Le Mans 24 Hours alongside his father Jos, as both consider future sports car outings beyond Formula 1.
Max Verstappen has indicated he would like to race in the Le Mans 24 Hours with his father Jos, as both drivers weigh up a possible family entry into endurance racing. The idea has been discussed openly by both Verstappens, with Max describing the prospect as "certainly interesting" and Jos confirming his own ambitions to return to the event.
The prospect of a Verstappen father-son entry follows a recent trend of Formula 1 drivers targeting Le Mans. Nico Hulkenberg claimed overall victory at his first attempt, and interest in the event has grown with the introduction of the hypercar class. Max, who made his F1 debut at 17, has said he would like to share a car with Jos if the opportunity arises and the F1 calendar allows. "If I go to Le Mans, I want to do it with him," Max said, adding that the race's unique demands and atmosphere appeal to him after watching Jos compete there in the past.
Jos Verstappen's racing return
Jos Verstappen, who last raced in Formula 1 with Minardi in 2003, has been preparing for a return to competitive motorsport. In late 2021, he entered the Jack's Int. Drenthe rally in Assen and is expected to compete in the 24 Hours of Dubai in January alongside Thierry Vermeulen. Jos has said he hopes to race at Le Mans but cannot confirm any entry as definite. "You could see me racing again next year. I hope to do Le Mans next year but at the moment I can't say it's 100 per cent for sure," Jos told Dutch media.
The Dutch press has speculated that Jos's return to GT and endurance racing could pave the way for a joint Le Mans outing with Max. Both have emphasised that any such entry would depend on timing and the right opportunity, with Max currently focused on Formula 1 commitments with Red Bull.
F1 drivers and Le Mans crossovers
The idea of F1 drivers competing at Le Mans is not new, but the current hypercar era has renewed interest. Max Verstappen referenced Nico Hulkenberg's 2015 win as an inspiration, noting the event's appeal and the challenge of racing through the night and traffic. Other F1 drivers, including Kevin Magnussen, have also spoken about the prospect of racing at Le Mans with their fathers.
