BMW unveiled the 3.0 CSL Hommage concept at the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, reviving the spirit of its 1970s racing legend with modern materials and dramatic styling.
BMW pulled the covers off its 3.0 CSL Hommage concept at the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, paying tribute to the original 1970s 3.0 CSL that made its name on both road and racetrack. The new concept, finished in a vivid Golf Yellow, combines retro cues with aggressive modern aerodynamics and lightweight carbon construction.
Design echoes the original CSL
The 3.0 CSL Hommage’s bodywork is defined by flared arches, deep grooves and a bold front end with oversized kidney grilles. At the rear, a large decklid spoiler and a smaller roof-mounted wing evoke the original’s racing intent. Carbon fibre is used extensively, both for its light weight and to showcase modern material technology, with exposed sections highlighting the construction. The 21-inch alloys feature integrated air blades, and the lighting uses advanced LED and laser systems.
Aerodynamics play a central role, with active vents and intakes funnelling air to key areas. The sculpted surfaces are not just for show: they are intended to improve airflow and downforce, reflecting lessons learned from decades of BMW motorsport involvement.
Interior: racing inspiration with modern touches
Inside, the Hommage concept continues its motorsport theme. The cabin is pared back, with a pair of single-piece carbon fibre bucket seats, a fire extinguisher and integrated helmet storage. The dashboard is a single sweep of wood, a nod to the original CSL’s period details, but the rest is thoroughly modern. The steering wheel is a futuristic, multi-spoke design, and the harnesses are upgraded for safety. BMW’s emphasis on minimalism is clear, but the materials and layout are unmistakably premium.
A concept with historic roots
The original BMW 3.0 CSL, launched in 1972, was a homologation special for touring car racing. It used aluminium and plexiglass to shed weight, giving it a competitive edge. The Hommage concept updates this philosophy with carbon fibre, but the ethos remains: reduce mass and maximise performance. While the original was built, sold and raced, the 2015 concept is a one-off, unlikely to see production or competition use.
BMW’s tradition of unveiling concepts at Villa d’Este has produced several cars whose design cues later appeared in production models. The 3.0 CSL Hommage is a clear statement of intent, blending heritage with technology, and demonstrating how the brand sees its past informing its future.
