Boreas hypercar project draws on Greek myth and hybrid power
Spanish engineering firm DSD Design and Motorsport is preparing to unveil the Boreas, a 1,000hp-plus hybrid hypercar with a Game of Thrones-inspired name and a limited run of 12.
DSD Design and Motorsport, a Spanish engineering outfit, is set to reveal the Boreas hypercar during the Le Mans festivities on 14 June 2017. The project, named after the Greek god of the north wind, aims for a place among the world’s most exclusive performance cars, with production capped at just 12 units.
The Boreas is designed around a hybrid powertrain that DSD claims will deliver four-digit horsepower, meaning at least 1,000hp (745kW). While the company has not disclosed full details, the setup will include a custom-built engine developed in partnership with a major industry name, combined with a battery pack capable of providing up to 100km of electric-only driving. This places the Boreas in direct competition with hybrid hypercars such as the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, both of which have set benchmarks for electrified performance.
Limited production and bespoke approach
Only 12 Boreas hypercars will be produced, a number chosen to reflect the 12 children of the mythological Boreas. Each car will be tailored to its buyer’s specifications, with DSD hinting at advanced materials and manufacturing techniques. The company has stated it is "quite avant-garde with the use of materials and their application", suggesting extensive use of carbon fibre and lightweight composites to keep weight in check and performance high.
Hybrid hypercar competition
With its claimed power output and electric range, the Boreas enters a rarefied segment already occupied by hybrid hypercars from established manufacturers. The LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder have each combined electrification with extreme performance, but DSD’s approach with Boreas is to offer even greater exclusivity through its strictly limited run and bespoke build process. - Hybrid powertrain targeting over 1,000hp
- 100km (62 miles) electric-only range
- Limited to 12 bespoke units
- Debut scheduled for Le Mans 2017
Further technical details, including the exact engine configuration and performance figures, are expected at the Boreas’s official unveiling. DSD’s entry into the hypercar market will be closely watched, given the project’s ambitious targets and the company’s claims of advanced materials and engineering.
