German tuner Boba Motoring has transformed a Volkswagen Golf Mk2 with a 1.8T engine and 920hp, delivering performance that eclipses many modern supercars.
Boba Motoring has pushed the boundaries of what’s possible with the Volkswagen Golf Mk2, unveiling a 920hp build based on the 1.8T engine. The German tuner’s latest project rewrites expectations for 1980s hot hatches, delivering acceleration figures that challenge contemporary supercars.
Engine and Drivetrain Modifications
The foundation of this build is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder, based on a diesel block for added strength. Boba Motoring equipped the engine with a billet steel crankshaft, forged pistons, steel connecting rods and a KR 16-valve cylinder head, components chosen to withstand the immense forces generated at this power level. The highlight is a Garrett GTX4202R turbocharger, which is responsible for the dramatic jump in output. With E85 fuel, the Golf’s engine produces a claimed 920hp (686kW).
To put that power to the ground, the car uses Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. This transforms the previously front-driven hatch into a four-wheel-drive drag weapon, helping it launch with minimal wheelspin despite the huge output.
Performance Figures
Boba Motoring’s figures are remarkable for a car that began life with a fraction of this output. The Golf II accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.3 seconds. The 0 to 200 km/h mark arrives in 6.0 seconds. Over the quarter mile, the car stops the clock at 9.08 seconds, territory usually reserved for purpose-built drag cars and hypercars. These numbers put it ahead of the likes of the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Aventador and McLaren MP4-12C in straight-line sprints, at least in ideal conditions.
What Sets This Build Apart
While the Golf II has long been a favourite among tuners, few have taken the platform to this extreme. The use of a diesel block, extensive internal upgrades and E85 fuel tuning set the Boba Motoring build apart from typical modified Golfs. The all-wheel-drive conversion is essential for harnessing the power, transforming the car’s dynamic character and making it a genuine threat on the drag strip.
