Volkswagen plots new crossovers to expand SUV range
Volkswagen is preparing a new wave of crossovers, including a next-generation Tiguan, a production Cross Coupe, and Polo-based SUV to target fast-growing segments.
Volkswagen is planning a major expansion of its crossover and SUV range, with new models under development to strengthen its position in a segment that continues to grow across global markets. The company’s upcoming line-up is expected to include a new Tiguan, a production version of the Cross Coupe concept, and a Polo-based crossover aimed at the compact SUV class.
Next-generation Tiguan and Cross Coupe
The next Tiguan is set to build on the success of Volkswagen’s established compact SUV, with updates expected in both design and technology. Alongside it, Volkswagen has signalled that the Cross Coupe concept, first shown as a design study, is moving towards production. The Cross Coupe is likely to spawn multiple derivatives, including a long wheelbase version and a CC-badged variant, broadening its appeal for different markets and customer needs.
Volkswagen’s move comes as rivals intensify their efforts in the crossover segment. The Cross Coupe, with its coupe-like roofline and raised stance, is positioned to compete with similar offerings from other European brands. LWB and CC variants are expected to target markets where demand for extra space or premium styling is strong.
Polo-based crossover and Alltrack plans
A Polo-based SUV is also in development, according to industry reports. This model is intended to take on the likes of the Opel Mokka and Peugeot 2008 in the compact crossover segment. The Polo SUV is expected to use Volkswagen’s MQB-A0 platform, which it will share with future Skoda and SEAT models. Engine options under consideration include a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with outputs from 105 to 150hp, a 1.4-litre TDI diesel with 95hp, and a 2.0-litre TDI diesel offering up to 150hp.

Volkswagen is also evaluating Alltrack versions of the Up!, Golf and Touran for launch in the coming years. These models would offer raised ride heights and all-wheel drive, targeting buyers seeking a crossover look and light off-road ability without moving to a full SUV.
Platform sharing and group strategy
The next-generation Touareg will be built on the MLBevo platform, which is also set to underpin SUVs from Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini. This shared architecture is expected to bring cost efficiencies and allow for a wider range of technologies across Volkswagen Group’s luxury and performance brands.
Volkswagen’s expansion into new crossover segments comes at a time when global SUV demand is rising. The brand’s strategy aims to cover a broad spectrum, from compact models based on the Polo to larger, more premium offerings such as the next Touareg and Cross Coupe derivatives. The company’s ability to share platforms and components across brands is central to this approach, allowing for a rapid and cost-effective roll-out of new models.
