Williams secures Bottas for 2015 as rivals show interest
Williams confirmed Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa will stay on for 2015 after Bottas’s strong form drew attention from rival Formula One teams.
Williams announced at the 2014 Italian Grand Prix that it would retain both Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa for the 2015 Formula One season, following a string of strong results that had put Bottas firmly on the radar of rival teams.
Bottas had scored four podiums in five races leading up to Monza, helping Williams climb past Ferrari to third in the Constructors’ Championship. At Monza itself, Bottas finished fourth, while Massa secured his first podium of the year. The team’s form had not gone unnoticed, with Bottas’s performances in particular drawing interest from other F1 outfits. McLaren was among those reportedly considering the Finn for a potential seat.
The confirmation of Bottas and Massa as Williams’s 2015 pairing ended speculation about a possible move for Bottas. The team’s deputy principal Claire Williams acknowledged that competitors had been keeping an eye on Bottas, given his rapid progress and consistency. According to Williams, Bottas had started his F1 career with the team and wished to continue, with the team itself keen to maintain continuity after several years of driver changes.
Contract improvements and driver rotation
While Williams did not disclose contract details, it was widely rumoured that Bottas’s new deal included improved terms to reflect his value and to secure his loyalty amid interest from elsewhere. One area of discussion was the team’s Friday practice policy. Throughout 2014, Bottas was the driver most often asked to step aside for reserve drivers Felipe Nasr or Susie Wolff during practice sessions, while Massa kept his seat. It was not clear whether this arrangement would continue in 2015, with Williams declining to comment on potential changes.
Bottas himself said the new contract was the most memorable part of his Monza weekend, describing it as a relief to have his future settled. The Finn added 12 points to his tally with his fourth-place finish in Italy, further strengthening Williams’s position in the championship.
Continuity for 2015
The decision to keep Bottas and Massa for another season marked a shift for Williams, which had changed its driver line-up several times in recent years. The team aimed to build on its momentum and maintain stability as it sought to consolidate its position among the front-runners. Bottas’s contract renewal also signalled Williams’s intent to fend off interest from wealthier rivals and focus on long-term progress.
