Leaked images reveal interior of new BMW 3 Series ahead of debut
Unofficial photos posted online give the first look at the redesigned BMW 3 Series (F30) cabin, days before the model’s scheduled unveiling in Munich.
BMW’s new 3 Series interior has appeared online in a set of hurriedly taken images, just days before the car’s planned official launch at the Munich plant. The leak gives the clearest view yet of the F30 generation’s cabin, which will replace the outgoing E90 model later in 2011.
The photos, which surfaced on a blog unaffiliated with BMW, show a dashboard layout that marks a clear departure from the previous car. The centre console is wider and more prominent, with the iDrive controller positioned for easier access. Aluminium trim and wood accents are visible, suggesting BMW will continue to offer a mix of finishes across the range.
The iDrive screen sits atop the dash in a tablet-style housing. Climate controls and audio buttons are grouped more tightly below the vents. The steering wheel design and instrument cluster appear closely related to those in the current 5 Series, hinting at BMW’s intention to bring the 3 Series interior closer to its larger executive models.
Technology and trim updates
BMW’s iDrive infotainment remains central to the new interior, with the controller now placed further forward and angled towards the driver. The leaked images show clear aluminium highlights and a choice of wood inlays, indicating a focus on perceived quality. The gear selector for automatic models follows BMW’s latest electronic design, and the handbrake is now an electronic switch rather than the old lever.
Rear seat images have not surfaced, but the wider centre tunnel suggests more rear legroom and improved comfort. The boot opening appears unchanged from the outgoing car, though this cannot be confirmed until the official reveal.
Engines and model range
BMW is expected to launch the new 3 Series with a choice of three diesel and five petrol engines, along with the ActiveHybrid 3. The hybrid will pair the 3.0-litre six-cylinder TwinPower turbo petrol with an electric motor, following the system already seen in the larger 5 Series ActiveHybrid. All engines will be offered with either six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearboxes, depending on market.
