A leaked photograph has given an early look at the all-new Volvo S60, showing the saloon’s rear three-quarter view without camouflage. The image, which first appeared on Swedish site Teknikens Värld, appears to have been taken inside Volvo’s Torslanda facility and shows the S60 parked next to an XC60 and a covered vehicle believed to be a future model.

The new S60’s styling aligns closely with the V60 estate, which Volvo revealed earlier in the year. While the leaked image focuses on the rear, the front end is expected to mirror the V60’s design, with signature Thor’s Hammer headlights and a similar grille treatment. The S60’s proportions and surfacing continue Volvo’s recent design language, with a strong shoulder line and pronounced rear lights.

Shared platform and powertrains with V60

The S60 is built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which also underpins the V60, XC60 and larger 90-series models. The new saloon is expected to adopt the V60’s interior layout, including the central touchscreen and minimalist dashboard. Powertrain options are likely to mirror the V60, with a mix of petrol and diesel engines and at least two plug-in hybrid variants planned. No diesel option is expected for the US market, reflecting Volvo’s shift in strategy.

Debut expected later in 2018

Volvo is expected to unveil the S60 officially at its Charleston, South Carolina plant later in 2018. The S60 will be the first Volvo model built in the United States, supporting the company’s growth plans in North America. The new saloon will join the V60 estate and XC60 SUV in Volvo’s mid-size range, targeting premium rivals such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The leak follows a trend of new model images surfacing ahead of official reveals, as seen with the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estateand 2015 Porsche 911 Targa. Volvo’s official details on the S60’s equipment, full engine range and market rollout are still to come.
