Peugeot has pulled the covers off the Rifter 4x4 Concept, a show car designed to highlight the off-road potential of its new leisure van. The concept will take centre stage at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, joining a wave of adventurous MPVs and crossovers vying for attention at the event.

Based on the production Rifter, the 4x4 Concept uses an all-wheel drive system developed with specialist Dangel. The system offers three selectable modes: front-wheel drive (2RM), rear-wheel drive (4RM) and a Lock mode for tougher conditions. Peugeot has raised the ride height by 80mm and fitted BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres, making the van more capable away from tarmac.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel engine producing 130hp and 300Nm, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. This is the same engine offered in the standard Rifter, but the concept’s drivetrain and suspension upgrades are aimed at buyers with a taste for adventure.

Adventure-focused features

Peugeot has equipped the Rifter 4x4 Concept with a roof tent developed by Autohome, colour-matched to the van and fitted with a mattress covered in the same fabric as the seats. The concept also showcases Peugeot’s new eM02 FS Powertube electric mountain bike, which is carried on a rear-mounted rack. These additions underline the vehicle’s positioning as a go-anywhere leisure tool rather than a pure workhorse.

The Rifter 4x4 Concept is not confirmed for production, but it previews the kind of accessories and off-road capability Peugeot could offer to buyers looking for more than the standard van. Its debut at Geneva puts it alongside other concept debuts and production reveals, including rivals from Volkswagen and MINI at the same show.
