Volkswagen reveals updated 2009 Phaeton with new V6 and tech upgrades
Volkswagen has announced the 2009 Phaeton featuring a new V6 FSI engine, updated infotainment, and a raft of refinements to keep its flagship saloon competitive.
Volkswagen has introduced the 2009 Phaeton, bringing a new V6 FSI engine, a revised centre console, and an upgraded infotainment system to its flagship saloon. The model year update aims to keep the Phaeton relevant in the luxury segment as Euro 5 emissions standards approach.
New V6 FSI engine and improved efficiency
The most substantial mechanical change for 2009 is the introduction of a 3.6-litre V6 FSI petrol engine. Rated at 206 kW (280 PS), it replaces the outgoing 3.2-litre V6 and delivers 39 PS more while reducing average fuel consumption by 0.4 litres per 100 km. The new engine offers 360 Nm of torque between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm. Official figures put 0–100 km/h at 8.6 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. CO2 emissions drop from 288 g/km to 273 g/km, and average consumption is quoted at 11.7 litres/100 km.
All Phaeton engines, including the V8 and W12 petrols, now comply with the Euro 5 standard that takes effect from September 2009. Outputs for the V8 and W12 are 246 kW (335 PS) and 331 kW (450 PS) respectively. Diesel and petrol options now range from 240 PS up to the W12’s 450 PS.
Infotainment and interior upgrades
A new generation of infotainment is central to the 2009 update. The Phaeton now offers the RCD 810 and RNS 810 systems, both based around an 8-inch touchscreen. The RNS 810 navigation system adds a 30GB hard drive for maps and music storage, MP3 playback, and an optional hybrid TV tuner. Bluetooth preparation is available, and buyers can specify a 1,000-watt Dynaudio sound system with twelve speakers and a twelve-channel amplifier.
The centre console has been redesigned to integrate climate control and infotainment functions, with new white switch illumination and “Warm grey” trim. The standard four-zone climate control receives a new control unit, and the long-wheelbase version adds a rear makeup mirror.
Styling and equipment changes
Exterior updates are modest. The 2009 Phaeton features a slightly revised grille, three new alloy wheel designs (17, 18, and 19 inch), and three new paint colours: Silver Leaf Metallic, Beryllium Grey Metallic, and Mocca-Anthracite Pearl Effect. Inside, new leather and wood trim options are offered, including “Corn silk beige” leather and “Poplar grain latte macchiato” or “Vavona” wood. The car key is updated, and the W12 model now offers ceramic front brakes.

Safety and driver assistance
The 2009 Phaeton introduces Front Assist as part of the adaptive cruise control package. Using radar, the system monitors the distance to vehicles ahead and can precondition the brakes if a collision risk is detected. The feature is designed to reduce braking distances and improve safety at speeds from 30 to 200 km/h. A rearview camera is now available as an option.
