Abarth Unveils 2012 Punto SuperSport with 180hp and Matte Detailing
Abarth's 2012 Punto SuperSport, revealed for the Frankfurt Motor Show, delivers 180hp from its 1.4-litre turbo engine and features distinctive matte black styling.
Abarth has introduced the 2012 Punto SuperSport, a limited-run hot hatch based on the facelifted Punto and set for its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011. Building on the previous Punto Evo Esseesse, the SuperSport receives both cosmetic and mechanical upgrades aimed at enthusiasts looking for more performance and distinctive looks.
Performance and technical changes
The Punto SuperSport uses the same 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged four-cylinder found in the Punto Evo Esseesse, but tuned to produce 180hp at 5,750rpm and 199lb ft of torque at 2,500rpm. This puts it among the more powerful offerings in the hot hatch segment of the time. Abarth claims a 0-60mph time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 134mph, figures that reflect a meaningful step up from the standard Punto models.
Chassis upgrades include revised suspension for sharper handling and a braking system with perforated and self-ventilated front discs, four-piston calipers, and perforated rear discs. The car sits on 18-inch alloy wheels, behind which red brake calipers are visible, reinforcing the car's performance intent.
Exterior and interior features
Visually, the SuperSport stands out with a matte black finish on the bonnet, roof and door mirrors, contrasting with the rest of the bodywork. This treatment is unique to the SuperSport and sets it apart from the standard Punto and previous Esseesse versions. The 18-inch alloys further differentiate the car, while subtle Abarth badging signals its tuning house origins.
Inside, Abarth has fitted black leather seats and a leather steering wheel, both accented with red and yellow stitching. The cabin also features the Blue&Me Map satellite navigation system, which includes telemetric functions, aiming to appeal to drivers keen on tracking performance data as well as navigation.
Position in the Abarth range
The Punto SuperSport represents the most focused version of the Punto available from Abarth in 2012, sitting above the standard and Esseesse models. Its mechanical upgrades and distinctive styling are intended to attract buyers seeking a more exclusive and aggressive hot hatch, at a time when competition in the segment was intensifying. The SuperSport’s enhancements build on the formula established by the Esseesse, while offering visual updates in line with the facelifted Punto.
