2013 New York Auto Show: Key Debuts and Highlights

Luxury brands dominated the 2013 New York Auto Show, with major unveilings from Acura, Cadillac, Jaguar, Jeep and more as manufacturers targeted the US market’s appetite for premium and performance models.

The 2013 New York Auto Show opened with a strong focus on luxury and performance, reflecting the city’s status as a major market for premium brands. Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche all brought new models or major updates, while US and Asian manufacturers targeted the American market with refreshed SUVs, saloons and hybrids.

Luxury and performance lead the headlines

Cadillac revealed the third-generation CTS, aiming to push further into the mid-size executive saloon segment. Jaguar’s XJR returned to the range, offering 550PS from its supercharged V8, while Mercedes-Benz gave the US its first look at the CLA 45 AMG, a compact saloon with a 355bhp turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Porsche’s 911 GT3 made its North American debut after a Geneva outing, and Rolls-Royce brought the Wraith, its new fastback coupe. BMW’s stand included the 328d, introducing a four-cylinder diesel to the US 3 Series range, and the facelifted 2014 Buick LaCrosse and Regal underlined GM’s push for upmarket buyers.

SUVs and crossovers for US buyers

Jeep presented the all-new 2014 Cherokee, a model that drew attention for its radical styling and new nine-speed automatic gearbox. Range Rover’s new Sport made its world debut, promising lower weight and more agility. Honda updated its Odyssey MPV, while Toyota brought the new Highlander, both targeting family buyers.

Hybrids and alternative powertrains

Hybrids and alternative drivetrains made a stronger showing than in previous years. Subaru introduced the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, its first production hybrid, while Kia showed the updated Optima Hybrid. Volkswagen’s seventh-generation Golf appeared in US spec, joined by the 2014 Golf GTI. The Chevrolet SS, a rear-drive V8 saloon, also made its US debut.

Other notable debuts

Chevrolet updated the Camaro with a new front end, while the Corvette Stingray Convertible gave showgoers a look at the open-top version of GM’s flagship sports car. Hyundai’s revised Equus saloon aimed at the luxury segment, and Scion refreshed the tC coupe for younger buyers. Volvo’s S60 and S80 saloons also appeared with updates for 2014.

The 2013 New York Auto Show confirmed the city’s role as a key stage for luxury, performance and family vehicles aimed at the US market.
